Abstract

Ayurvedic formulation is essential in order to assess the quality of drugs, based on the concentration of their active principles. The main objective of the present study is to develop a simple, rapid and validated UV fingerprint method for estimation of total polyphenols as tannic acid in Manibhadra yoga and crude drugs. Tannic acid is one of the major constituent of Manibhadra yoga and it is official in Ayurvedic formulary of India and it is the most common formulation used for respiratory disorders in Ayurvedic medicinal preparation. It content of the well documented medicinal important plants Embelia ribe (Vidanga), Embelica officinalis (Amalaki), Terminalia chebula (Haritaki), Operculina turpethum (Nishotha) and guda (jeggary). The detection wavelength of tannic acid was 277.2 nm. This method is used for the estimation of tannic acid in formulations and identifies and assessed its quality by using UV method. The estimation was carried out with three laboratory batches and one marketed formulation.

Abstract

Selective and efficient analytical methods are required not only for quality assurance but also for authentication of herbal formulations. The main objective of the present study is to develop a simple, rapid and validated UV fingerprint method for estimation of total polyphenols as tannic acid in Astangavaleha and crude drugs. Astangavaleha is official in Ayurvedic formulary of India and it is the most common formulation used for respiratory disorders in Ayurvedic medicinal preparation. It Composition of the medicinal important plants Myrica esculenta, Inula racemosa, Pistacia integerrima, Trachyspermum ammi, Carum carvi, Zingiber officinale, Piper nigrum, Piper longum, madhu and Zingiber officinale (svarasa). The estimation was carried out with three laboratory batches and one marketed formulation by spectrophotometric approach at 277.2 nm.
